Exciting developments are underway at the Haw River State Trail in Chatham County, as new improvements are set to transform popular paddling and hiking spots. Construction has already begun at the Bynum Mill Access in the Lower Haw River State Natural Area, with plans to pave the parking lots, install a new restroom, and create a concrete paddle launch. These updates are part of the Connect NC Bond project, estimated to take around nine months to complete.
In addition to the Bynum Mill project, there are efforts to secure grants for the Pegg tract, located upstream of the Bynum Dam. Improvements could include enhanced paddle access and informal trails. Furthermore, Chatham County has begun the permitting process for a restroom facility at the US 64 Haw River Canoe Access, now officially designated as part of the Haw River State Trail.
However, concerns remain over the future of the Chicken Bridge paddle access, as the private property where the current path sits is for sale. Finding an alternative may be challenging due to high market prices in the area.
