This November, Orange County voters will be presented with bond referendums along with the presidential, gubernatorial and state elections. Bond referendums allow voters to approve or deny local governments taking on public debt in order to finance large projects via the ballot.
2024 Education Bond: This is the largest bond on the ballot, clocking in at $300 Million to support school facilities in Orange County. If passed, resources will go to both Orange County Schools and Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. For more on the school bond, Martin Johnson did a deep dive on Triangle Blog Blog. Lisa Dunn also published an article supporting our public schools and the dual language programs here on Triangle Blog Blog (with brat inspired cover art). CHCCS will hold public information sessions on August 1 (at the Chapel Hill Public Library), August 7 (at Southern Human Services Center) and August 8 (at Lincoln Center). The CHCCS School board will reconvene on August 15 at 7 pm. Check out Brighton McConnell's update on the bond and public input sessions here.
Chapel Hill Municipal Bond: Chapel Hill voters will also vote on 5 Municipal Bonds worth a total of $44 Million. $15 Million would go toward affordable housing initiatives, $15 Million toward public facilities, $7.5 Million toward streets and sidewalks, $4.5 Million to parks and recreation facilities, and $2 Million for open spaces and greenways.
